moses: the gospel, hip-hop musical by Walter Robinson

the musical

MOSES by Walter Robinson is a contemporary African-American dance work re-telling the 4,OOO-year-old story of the Hebrew Exodus from slavery to freedom.

Robinson frames his two-hour opus with narration segments from the Torah (Book of Exodus) spoken in English and Hebrew. The heart of the work is four genres of Black music and dance seamlessly woven with this narration. Together they fuel the emotional/theatrical arc of the story. Musically, they hear lovely traditional Broadway duets with soulful brush strokes, down home gospel, innovative rap, and one classical anthem, "The Ten Commandments". This pastiche convincingly portrays the passionate journey to freedom.

As a spiritual work, MOSES is universally appealing not only to Christians and Jews, but to secular audiences as well. MOSES is for the entire family.
