How did the idea of writing a musical on Moses come to you?

Some years ago Lenny Zakim, a great Jewish human rights advocate, asked me: "Could you write a gospel musical on Moses as a way of bringing Jews and Blacks together as an audience?"

I took Lenny's suggestion and composed MOSES; his vision was almost prophetic. Both blacks and Jews came to see MOSES in equal number, suburban and urban. It was as if audiences desired a way to connect—
